Sustainability at Evonik

WE TAKE OUR RESPONSIBILITY SERIOUSLY

As a specialty chemicals company with a presence throughout the world, Evonik sees sustainability and long-term business success as two sides of the same coin. That is reflected in the rising demand from our customers for products and services that demonstrate a good balance of economic, ecological and social factors. Sustainability has long since developed into a growth driver for Evonik.

EVONIK WINS HENKEL SUSTAINABILITY AWARD FOR SECOND YEAR IN A ROW

Evonik’s RHEANCE® One platform of green biosurfactants was recognized in the Beauty Care category for sustainability at the14th Annual Henkel Awards, which were announced at a gala virtual event during last week’s American Cleaning Industry (ACI) Annual Meeting. Last year, Evonik also won the Henkel Sustainability Award for a novel conditioner with excellent biodegradability that is sourced from natural, renewable materials.

Evonik supports United Nations sustainability goals

One of the four sustainable development goals (SDGs) relevant to the Evonik Group is Clean Water and Sanitation. We are continuously working toward decreasing our water consumption and reducing emissions into water bodies. Water is used mainly for cooling purposes, as process water in production, and for steam generation in power plants. As one of several measures to save fresh water, we have set up integrated systems with different grades of water quality. In addition, evaporation from cooling circuits is compensated many times over by condensate or used potable water. The current target, of reducing specific water consumption by 10 percent by the year 2020, will be replaced by a global water management system that over the long term will help avoid water stress for Evonik sites and neighboring areas.

EVONIK IS TOP EMPLOYER IN CHINA

For the 13th time, Evonik has been recognized as a Top Employer in China and ranked among the Top 10 for four years in a row! This exciting achievement was officially announced on December 2nd by the Top Employers Institute.

CLIMATE-FRIENDLY CHEMICALS FROM CARBON DIOXIDE

At the project center in Marl, they are bringing together two processes involving a bioreactor and an electrolyzer to create artificial photosynthesis. “The innovative technology of Rheticus has the potential to help the energy transition succeed,” says Thomas Haas, the project leader at Evonik. “In the future this platform could be installed wherever a supply of carbon dioxide is available, for example at power plants or biogas systems.” Germany’s Federal Ministry of Education and Research is providing a total of €6.3 million of funding for the various phases of the project, which was launched at the end of 2019. The pilot plant was put into operation in the fall of 2020. The two companies are contributing their core expertise to this facility: Siemens Energy is providing the world’s first CO electrolyzer, which uses electricity to convert carbon dioxide and water into carbon monoxide and hydrogen in the first step of the process. Inside the bioreactor from Evonik, special microorganisms transform the synthesis gas that has been generated into valuable chemicals. In test operations in Marl, the bacteria are generating butanol and hexanol for research purposes. These two products can be used as starting materials for special plastics or food supplements.

EVONIK RECEIVES THE "LEADING EMPLOYERS" AWARD FOR THE FOURTH TIME

From 100,000 companies and 8 million pieces of data the best employers were identified - Evonik impressed the jury for the fourth time and belongs again to the top 1% employers in Germany and takes the first place in the chemicals sector for the fourth time in a row.

EVONIK AND BEIERSDORF ENGAGING IN JOINT RESEARCH TO TURN CARBON DIOXIDE INTO CARE PRODUCTS

Beiersdorf and Evonik have reached an agreement on a research partnership. Its aim is to develop sustainable raw materials for care products, using carbon dioxide (CO2) as the starting material. Beiersdorf is on the lookout for new sources of raw materials that will also reduce the company’s carbon footprint. One option here is artificial photosynthesis technology. The idea: with the aid of electricity from solar energy and bacteria, valuable raw materials are produced with water and CO2, drawing on natural photosynthesis as a model. The joint research project of Evonik and Beiersdorf is being funded by Germany’s Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) in the amount of around €1 million.

Evonik and Cassava Sciences join forces to fight Alzheimer’s disease

Evonik has entered into a supply agreement with Cassava Sciences, a clinical-stage biotechnology company focused on neuroscience. Evonik will supply Cassava Sciences with large-scale, clinical-grade quantities of simufilam, a drug candidate for the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease.

Evonik begins marketing of natural refrigerants

With immediate effect, Evonik's customers can now purchase three new natural refrigerants: throughout Europe and delivered using a means of transport particularly suitable for this purpose. This was made possible by the further shift of Evonik's existing C4 Verbund in Marl toward petrochemical specialties, primarily by adapting production processes. The most recent result of these adaptations are three hydrocarbon-based gases: n-butane (DRIVOSOL® R600), isobutane (DRIVOSOL® R600a), and propane (DRIVOSOL® R290).
