People Insights: Qingbiao

Welcome to our first People Insights Post from China! Qingbiao works in Shanghai as a supervisor in our Emergency Response department. In his interview he gives us a personal insight into the most valuable lessons he has learned in his life and what superpower he would like to possess.

Which book are you currently reading?

I am currently reading “Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind” by Yuval Noah Harari.

Which of your characteristics do you particularly appreciate?

My persistence.

What struck you the most since you started working?

Those who are smarter than you are also the ones who work the hardest.

Which idea inspired you the most?

This idea: "be a master on things you have control over, yet still be friends with fate which you can't control"

What superpower would you like to have?

I would like to be like Batman, equipped with the latest technology and go help those in need.

If you could have lunch with anyone on this world, who would that person be and what would you ask him or her?

I would like to meet Jack Ma, a Chinese entrepreneur. There’s a recent ongoing debate on IT companies’ 996 work schedule, a work practice referring to work from 6am to 6pm for six days a week. Thus, I would like to ask him about his work and daily routine and how he is able to maintain such a high level of energy.

What past experience of your life do you cherish the most/ gave you a valuable memory?

There are many: I spent two years in the military. There, I, for example, swam in the sea and set up tents in  mountains. I tasted from the four flavors of life!* When I look back on my life, the things I used to believe as meaningless, all turned out to be great memories, serving as inspiration for me.

*four flavors of life: A chinese saying, meaning that the reflection on different events in life can be divided into the categories sweet, sour, bitter and spicy.. "Tasting" all four tastes are important for a person's development and growth.
