Bernhard Christian Breloer - From trainee to senior project manager

When I had completed my business administration studies, I asked myself two questions: What requirements should my first job fulfill? And would I consider only direct employment or would I also be willing to take part in a trainee program?

After looking at vacancies in the area of finance and trainee programs, I was convinced that participating in a program such as this would be exactly the right thing for me. I soon found Evonik’s advertisement for the Controlling, Accounting & Finance Trainee Program, which is designed as a starting point for a career in management. Apart from the content of a program like this and its appropriate duration, I was especially interested in the fact that I could work abroad for several months, that I would have two experienced managers as mentors and that I would have development opportunities in the future. I applied immediately.

I received an invitation to attend the assessment center soon after sending my application and I was positively surprised that the selection process was split over two days. On the first day, applicants are tested in three different exercises and then, on day two, they receive detailed feedback about their performance. This is also available for the applicants who are not offered a contract.

My nervousness regarding the assessment center was not alleviated by the many observers, but at the same time I found the atmosphere very pleasant and fair throughout. There were no “hidden” tasks or staged stress situations. As a result, after the first day I returned home with a good feeling, which was fortunately confirmed the next day through the positive feedback that I received.

The program itself includes working in various business and service units in Germany and abroad and in the headquarters – mainly in Controlling and Accounting. In 16 months, the trainees get to know the operations and also the strategic aspects of the company. An elective part, which lasts several weeks, and participation in diverse development and advanced training measures are offered as well; this also includes the seminar series “Evonik Development Program” for future managers.

In retrospect, the 16 months were a very exciting and varied time with many interesting and different tasks and challenges. By allowing me to work in various departments, the trainee program gave me a comprehensive insight into the company within a short time. I was also able to establish a wide network with colleagues in different business areas and units. Together with the experiences from my two foreign transfers to Zurich and Singapore, I see particular added value that I would not have had with “normal” direct employment.

At the end of the program, I asked myself another important question: What next? The involvement of my two mentors in the assessment of possible follow-on jobs helped me a lot. Ultimately, my expectations were completely fulfilled with a position in Controlling in the Silica Business Line. Consequently, my participation in the Controlling, Accounting & Finance Trainee Program at Evonik was the perfect career start for me.

After more than three very instructive and exciting years in Business Line Controlling, I am working as a Senior Project Manager in Controlling at Performance Materials now. With this change, I was able to discover new challenges in a different segment at a different site.

I hope that the future will bring more career changes with new challenges for me.
