My role is Talent Acquisition Manager, North America Region

What makes the role of Talent Acquisition Manager so exciting?

This role initially intrigued me because it was a new role in Evonik North America. This presented the opportunity to establish a Talent Acquisition strategy in the region that would give Evonik a competitive advantage for recruiting top talent. While this has provided an environment for me to grow professionally, even more exciting is the level of partnership I have found at Evonik. The pace of change we have experienced would have been impossible without the strength of the full HR team, globally and in North America.

What are the trends driving recruiting?

Three major trends influence most of our strategic decisions -- unemployment rates, the pace of change in technology and consumer expectations. Unemployment in the United States is lower than it has been in 50 years. 50 years ago there was no internet, proactive sourcing for candidates or electronic applications. Technology has changed how we recruit, and is evolving at a rapid pace. Consumer shopping habits have changed. No longer reliant on a local retail shopping, we can place an order on our cell phone, comparing products made all over the world, and receive almost anything within two days. The combination of low unemployment, technological breakthroughs and changing buying habits have created a candidate pool that expects quick feedback and the convenience of mobile-enabled technology, while still expecting to be treated as an individual with hopes and dreams.

What does Evonik look for in top candidates?

As you can imagine, we have a wide variety of opportunities that represent many different skill sets. We seek candidates who are experts in every area of innovation from inspiration to distribution, as well as all the roles that keep us running smoothly as a large corporation. Beyond the technical skills, Evonik embraces the values of Performance, Speed, Openness and Trust, and an overriding culture of creativity and safety.

What opportunities for development have you had during your time at Evonik?

In a little over a year, I can say that every day has brought unlimited opportunity for growth and learning. It has impressed me that I have colleagues tell me openly that they are looking for their next job. Based on my prior work history, I assumed that meant that they were unhappy, and no longer cared if anyone knew they were leaving. Not at Evonik! Each of these individuals meant they were ready for their next role here, and they share that openly to make use of their internal network, and get feedback from those they trust. Our culture assumes development and growth, and we speak openly about that. How refreshing!

What does working internationally mean to you?

In the past, I have participated in global meetings for a few days at a time, and interacted with teammates all over the world by phone, but I have never been able to settle in and spend time anywhere outside of Virginia. It has been a dream of mine since I was 18 years old to work internationally and now I will be at our headquarters in Germany for a short-term assignment. Having spent a career in the communication business, building partnerships with people with different perspectives and backgrounds than me has been my favorite part of my career. I love hearing ideas and opinions about recruiting and human resources that are different from my training. Rather than thinking, “That’s not how we do it,” I love to settle into the moment and be open to learning why they take a different approach, or have a different belief.

What does #HumanChemistry mean to you?

The interaction of diverse, creative people is our formula for success. We are in the creativity business, and the interaction of all our people amplifies our results beyond individual achievement. This formula makes 1 + 1 = 16, rather than the expected 2. As an HR professional, when I read about Evonik before my interview, I was impressed with the focus on creativity, but thought that was probably limited to the teams working in new product development. It is not. It is pervasive, and is felt in every part of the organization, and it’s what drives me to jump out of bed every morning!
