Can you tell us briefly what your responsibilities are?

As technical manager, my role & responsibility includes giving best advice, guidance and recommendations to new and existing customers concerning the proper use of our products in their specific application. While discussing with them, I try to identify potential challenges and requirements of using Evonik products with the ultimate goal to create a trustful and sustainable relationship with Evonik.

What do you like most about what you do?

My function is embedded into a global business structure allowing me to work on an international level with colleagues from Europe, North America, China and customers from many different countries and nationalities to develop better products. But sometimes, due to our global structure, communication across time zones makes it difficult to react on customer requests right away and in a timely manner.

Why should someone do this job with Evonik?

My role gives me insight into a variety of end user markets and the different behavior of small and medium-sized versus truly globally operating multinationals. Moreover, my role is truly a cross-functional one with daily interaction with lots of internal functions; such as marketing, product management, product stewardship, and sales.

What does “Human Chemistry” mean to you?

Simply put: Humans exist because chemistry is the central reason for life. Consequently and performed for many centuries, humans use chemistry in order to improve everybody’s daily life. And that is what Evonik stands for: doing the extra special adjustment to help improving our lives.

What kind of person does well at Evonik?

As long as you are open-minded, broadly interested in the work we do and if you are willing to contribute to a team’s success, you will do well here. But before you jump to conclusions and think that you’ll fit into our culture straight away, carefully consider which role you want and which market you want to work in. This will be one of the most important decisions for your industry career.

What does “Opportunity” at Evonik mean to you?

You have the chance to broaden your scope of activities at Evonik. All you have to do is ask for it. And if you are reliable with the right set of skills, plenty of opportunities may cross your path when you work in cross-divisional projects. You are being asked to take responsibility. These are the colleagues we want and need to ensure future success. Working in my function, I get to interact closely with customers, so I can learn about their challenges to create more efficient, more effective, and more attractive solutions to end-consumers. I have the opportunity to translate these challenges into product features and can eventually recommend an existing product or initiate developments if this makes sense for Evonik from a commercial point of view.

How would you describe Evonik’s “Team Spirit”?

Step into Evonik and you will find a very collaborative environment where everyone works towards the business’ success as one joint entity by listening to each other and valuing every opinion made, no matter who made them. Take my team for example: It consists of highly motivated and skilled colleagues who want to reach the business goals by working extremely hard to get there. Even though pressure exists to achieve the set goals, there is still a friendly atmosphere amongst the group. I think that collaboration is essential to reach our goals. In my opinion, a team solution is likely to be superior to a single individual solution.

Can you tell us more about your experiences with flexibility at Evonik?

The hours I work at Evonik are flexible. It allows me to take more responsibility and balance the resources for my tasks and projects at work as well as for my family life. It means I work autonomously by setting priorities for tasks and topics. An example of when flexibility made the biggest difference to me is that I have young children that go to day care and kindergarten. This simply doesn’t work in a typical 9-5 job. Flexibility at Evonik allows me to drop off my children, pick them up and work from home when necessary and in line with the team. If I did not had the flexibility to look after my family the way I can today, I certainly would not be in my current position. But luckily, Evonik gave me the option to start working part time after the birth of my second daughter.
