Preston

In his story, Preston tells what makes Evonik a unique employer for him and how he experiences the working environment and corporate culture. He also reports on how Evonik Birmingham is involved in the local community.

Hey Preston! Compared to other places where you’ve worked, what is special and unique about Evonik in Birmingham?

The works here are challenging and rewarding. We have opportunities to develop and manufacture complex parenteral drug delivery systems for extended release applications as well as bioresorbable polymers and medical devices. It is unique that we can support a variety of dosage forms including implants, microparticles, liposomes at different development stages.

What do you love about Birmingham? How do you spend your time when you’re not at work?

I love the beautiful natural scenery around the city and I enjoy spending time with my family. My kids are full of energy so we like to keep them occupied. I also love playing tennis.

In sports as well as at work, teamwork plays an important role. What does #TeamSpirit mean to you?

I think Team Spirit is the desire of a group of individuals to work together with passion to achieve a common goal despite their differences in characters and personal interests.

How would you describe your team? For example, what do you like best about your coworkers?

There are many teams in the Birmingham site. I would say my primary team is my colleagues in the Formulation and Analytical Development Department. I like our diverse cultures and backgrounds in the department. And most importantly they are dependable!

How would you describe the work environment and the company culture?

I think the work culture encourages open communication. I feel comfortable to express opinions and receive feedback at work. We are not perfect and there are frustrations occasionally due to the complexity and the heavy regulation of our works, but overall we are willing to support each other and overcome challenges as a team!

One last question: Are there any outreach and volunteering opportunities Evonik Birmingham offers in the community?

The site has been partnering with Habitat for Humanity for the past few years to help families building affordable homes. It is a lot of fun to work together and service the community. I learned how to frame a house, install insulation and siding from the previous projects. We also have regular blood drive, and sometimes holiday toy drive for Children’s Hospital of Alabama. We are fortunate to have people at our site that are passionate about community service.
