Reverse Mentoring

Evonik Fosters Cross-generational and Cross-cultural Learning

Education and learning are the key drivers for advancing company growth and employee development at Evonik. In our Reverse Mentoring Program, junior employees get the chance to mentor more experienced employees.

Cross-generational and cross-cultural learning are a source for innovation and personal development. Evonik’s Reverse Mentoring Program therefore gives employees the opportunity to develop their skills and to broaden their knowledge by encouraging less experienced employees to mentor more experienced employees all over the world, thus resulting in mutually enriching relationships. This exchange between employees however, not only leads to the acquisition of new abilities and competencies, but is also intended to broaden the horizon of our employees far beyond their work.

“When I was first introduced to the Reverse Mentoring Program, my first thought was: How can I help someone much more experienced than I am?” - Camila and her mentee Thalita soon found out though, that reverse mentoring goes both ways. While Thalita had the chance to share her expertise of effectively using ‘LinkedIn Tools’, Camila supported her by providing her with valuable materials in return. Through their time in the program, Thalita and Camila became learning advocates for each other and had the chance to grow professionally as did others:

  • “The Reverse Mentorship program thrives on that very principle of fostering respect and understanding. Even things as small as the role reversal, experienced employees being called mentees and inexperienced employees as mentors, highlights a priority of mutual respect and learning. […] It’s a win for all parties involved.” – Michael with his mentee Corey, US

  • “Looking back to our 3 months experience, we both liked the experience putting ourselves in new roles and extending our network across generations and cultures. […] Right from the beginning, we built up a trustful and open relationship and developed it over time.” – Nadine with her mentee Susan, Germany & US

  • “[…] My first thought was: ‘How can I help someone much more experienced than I?’ but I immediately felt excited about the idea of figuring it out. Nowadays, after three months working along with my mentee Thalita, I can say that I feel grateful and happy of being part of such a powerful and enriching experience. […] I encourage everyone to be part of this program to discover that we can always learn something new, and that the source of learning can be closer than what we think, inside Evonik, from any part of the world no matter the borders nor the age Let’s continue learning!” – Camila with her mentee Thalita, Argentina

  • “I must say that I learnt a lot within our Reverse Mentoring sessions. One time we talked about life coaches. She told me that she had such a coach back in China who helped her to find out what she really wants in her life and set some goals. I thought about working with a life coach, too, after finishing my master’s studies. It was very helpful that Sharon shared her experiences with me.” – Laura with her mentee Sharon, Germany

At Evonik, we want to offer our employees the best circumstances for personal growth and development. Want to find out yourself? Then join our team!
