Christopher in the Ruhr area

Even before his internship, Christopher had a clear idea about Creavis - the strategic unit of Evonik Industries AG in Marl, Germany. In our students@Evonik blog, he writes about whether his hopes have been realized and what his plans for the future are.

Even at the beginning of my studies, at the Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität in Münster, I often heard about Evonik´s Creavis - the strategic unit of Evonik Industries AG in Marl. Marl and Münster are very close. So, it's no wonder that I've heard about Creavis from my fellow students, professors and many others from time to time. Evonik´s Creavis is known as creative and is always looking forward to create innovations that make a difference - "Science to Business" as the Creavis always says.

Of course, this aroused my interest. I am studying Business Chemistry in the Master's program at the University of Münster and, even during my studies, we focused on innovations and new business ideas. That's why I was absolutely sure: I wanted to take a closer look at the Creavis and experience it during an internship!

I wasn´t disappointed. At Creavis, you don't feel like an intern but part of the team right away. As soon as I started, I was immediately involved in a management team project. After the first weeks, I had already learned a lot of new things and, at this point, my own project hadn't even started yet.

That changed after one month and I started my own project during my internship. I was given a lot of freedom, but I never had the feeling to be left alone. You can ask anyone for help and, even if your own supervisor has a lot to do, he always takes the time you need to discuss questions, procedures and decisions with him.

Although, I mainly worked on my own project, it didn't mean that I didn't get an insight into other projects. Every project manager at Creavis seeks advice and ideas from colleagues. For example, I was invited to a "Google Design Sprint" as part of my supervisor's project. The aim of the "Sprint" was to answer a certain question of a project within a week of intense brainstorming and reviewing. We were a team of scientists and engineers that stayed for one week in Essen, Germany. It was a great experience and that's exactly how I imagined teamwork in an innovative work environment: all work together to create a better future for all.

I spent a total of four months as an intern in the Innovation and Project Management department, but I stayed even longer to continue my project as my master's thesis. I owe this to my supervisor and the rest of the Creavis team. I am looking forward to this task in the next six months because working at the Creavis is simply fun.

See you soon,
Your Christopher
