Deepak - An internship at Evonik's SAM 3D

As a design engineer, I design your dreams!  Deepak completed his internship in the SAM 3D department at Evonik's Hanau site. Here he talks about his impressions of the first days and how his internship became the best professional experience he has yet had.

Namaste! My name is Deepak Varma Thota. I am from India and currently pursuing my master’s in mechanical and process engineering at TU Bergakademie Freiberg.

I came across the internship offer at Evonik on LinkedIn when I was actively looking for an opportunity to explore the European industrial market and to build a good professional network.

The role mentioned in the advertisement was kept without many specifics. Hoping for a suitable opportunity, I applied and was offered the position as a design intern in SAM 3D department. I was very excited because this is my dream job.

On my first day at work, I was stunned by the huge industrial park at Hanau with all the diverse set of people working together to create something from scratch. My supervisor is a very kind and helpful person. He personally welcomed me on my first day, showed me around the office, introduced me to everyone in the department and even bought me lunch at the canteen. I was given a detailed presentation on how the company works, what rules and regulations apply and more. I took part in a workshop where they showed me how the designed components are manufactured through various techniques. At the end they gifted me a 3D printed souvenir.

On my second day, I was asked not to limit myself and to go beyond one’s imagination to find solutions to design problems. I received solid support from other employees of various departments. I participated in many interesting training sessions and workshops on additive manufacturing techniques. My job is to design continuous heat exchanger / chemical reactors for various chemical reactions. Through every step of progress I make, my supervisor is acting as a fuel to help me move further.

The best thing about Evonik is that you have freedom and flexibility within your work. I also want to specially mention the delicious food at Evonik’s canteen. Unfortunately, I will be leaving the company in a few months to pursue my master thesis at university. I wish I could stay longer but it is what it is. Even though the pandemic has prevented me from getting to know more people in person, I still feel part of Evonik and integrated into my team. I was given the opportunity to spread my wings as well as to explore and design my imaginations into successful products. That is what makes my experience here amazing and the best professional experience I have yet had.

Best Regards,
Deepak
