Markus: Something of Everything

Hello, 

I am Markus, 26, and I am studying at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology for Process Engineering / Chemical Engineering for a Master's degree. After my last exam I wanted to do a voluntary internship in the process development department of a chemical company to find out if this could be a potential field of work for me.  

Last year, I became aware of Evonik during a lecture excursion. As one saya, "first impressions count" and Evonik made a lasting impression on me during this excursion. In due course, I applied for an advertised position and despite Corona, I was accepted to a 3-month internship with the option of a subsequent master's thesis in particle process engineering at the Hanau site.  

My internship is mainly characterized by its versatility, where I can gain insight into various areas. Thus my internship is divided into simulation work with Comsol Multiphysics, strength laboratory analyses and the introduction of agile working methods in the 3D printing area. I have a lot of freedom in my work, but despite Covid-19 and the home office time that comes with it, I enjoy very good supervision and a lively exchange with colleagues. I have weekly meetings both with my supervisors and with other specialist groups to get an impression of what everyday work as a process engineer looks like at Evonik.  

What I find particularly interesting in my department is the bundled knowledge from various fields (biotechnology, physics, chemistry, and process engineering). If you are not yet sure which direction you want to take with your master's thesis or studies, you can talk to all kinds of people here and gain new impressions. In any case, it has helped me a lot! 

After the first two months, I can definitely say that I've been able to take a lot of experience with me and I'm looking forward to the rest of my internship at Evonik in process engineering.
