Empowering a New Generation in Their Careers

Focusing on nurturing talent and fostering growth, Venesa reflects on her experiences managing the intern development program , and overcoming challenges faced as a new HR professional.

Reflecting on your experience, what are you most proud of in your role managing the Summer Professional Enrichment (SPE) internship program?

In reflecting on my experience managing the Summer Professional Enrichment (SPE) internship program, I am most proud of the successful transition of our interns into full-time positions within the organization. It's incredibly rewarding to not only provide students with a solid foundation for their careers through internships but also to witness them thrive and choose to continue their journey with us. I'm particularly pleased that we filled all our International Professional Enrichment Program positions with talented individuals from our internship program. Being part of a company that values and prioritizes the development and retention of early career talent is truly inspiring, and it reinforces my commitment to fostering a supportive and enriching environment for our interns.

How has your experience as Region HR Manager contributed to your understanding of Evonik's operations and employee relations?

My experience as Region HR at Evonik has significantly enhanced my understanding of our operations and employee relations. By working closely with employees at our manufacturing plants, particularly in Wichita, KS, I've gained valuable insights into their daily responsibilities and the unique challenges they face. This hands-on experience has been eye-opening for me, especially coming from a corporate background where my concerns were often more about office ergonomics than the realities of a manufacturing environment. In HR, it's crucial to understand both the employees and the managers, and that requires a deep awareness of their work situations. Supporting our team members on the ground has allowed me to see firsthand the dedication and hard work that goes into their roles. This exposure has not only enriched my own role but has also highlighted the importance of empathy and understanding in fostering positive workplace relationships.

In what ways has Evonik supported your professional development, especially as a new employee navigating the HR landscape?

Throughout my time at Evonik, I have felt incredibly supported in my professional development. When I joined as an HR specialist, my managers provided me with numerous opportunities to engage with various areas of HR, including talent acquisition, employer branding, regional HR, and onboarding, among others. I’ve also had the chance to contribute to significant projects, such as the rollout of our new Parental Leave Policy in 2024. The company has consistently offered avenues for my growth, and I’m excited to share that they will be supporting me in obtaining my SHRM certification this upcoming fall. This commitment to my development has truly made a difference in my career journey at Evonik.

What were some of the biggest challenges you faced as an early-career employee, and how did you navigate those challenges?

One of the biggest challenges I faced as an early-career employee was learning that it's perfectly okay to make mistakes and ask for help. Coming straight out of school, I had the impression that any misstep would lead to reprimand or even termination. However, my experience at Evonik has been quite the opposite. Throughout my time here, I’ve received unwavering support whenever I’ve stumbled. I’ve come to realize that making mistakes is a natural part of the learning process, as long as you take the opportunity to learn from them. It's also crucial to remember that there are no dumb questions. Early-career professionals should be kinder to themselves, especially when surrounded by mentors who bring decades of experience to the table. Their support has been invaluable in helping me grow and navigate my career journey.
