Jürgen – Evolving Chemical Plant Engineering
Jürgen supports plants from concept to commissioning and optimizes existing plants. How does that impact the company's success? Find out in his interview!
What did you expect from a job as a chemical plant engineer during your studies?
Honestly, during my studies, I did not have a clear image or understanding of the tasks and activities involved in chemical plant engineering since the focus of the program was more on scientific and research-related topics. I had even less of an idea about project development and management.
However, I had the expectation that this position would focus on the application and technical implementation of processes and visions. And that was exactly my personal expectation and desire for a career. The chemical plant engineer position offers just that - the technical realization and implementation of process engineering and visions.
What makes working as a chemical plant engineer at Evonik a worthwhile experience for you?
One of the most exciting aspects is the opportunity to be involved in the entire process, from idea and process development, to concept and planning, to implementation, mechanical completion, and commissioning. As a project engineer, you actively contribute to the company's success - through the sustainable, energy-efficient realization of investment projects tailored to our customers, but also through new technical solutions that successfully represent and implement the interests and the requirements of our customers and the company by means of “Owner’s Engineering”.
Additionally, working in teams with colleagues from various fields, countries, and cultures expands both technical and social, cultural, and personal experiences. Finally, the individual development that comes with international projects and assignments is an extremely rewarding and sustainable experience.
What does it take to become a chemical plant engineer at Evonik?
An engineering degree, such as chemical engineering, is essential for such a role. However, the details of plant construction and especially project management are learned automatically on the job.
Self-organization and independent work are also important factors. In addition to technical understanding, social skills are also important, especially in project management, and one should be able to work well in a team and be open to international assignments.
