Liang’s Dedication to Grow in Process Engineering

Liang's journey to become a process engineer is a testament to his dedication and hard work. Read on to learn more about his career path and the challenges he faced.

What quality do you value most in yourself?

Honesty, perseverance and study a little every day.

How do you like to spend your time the most?

I like to watch US TV series, such as the Big Bang Theory and I am also interested in everything to do with cars

What is your favorite movie?

“The Pursuit of Happiness”

Where do you like to travel?

Pyramids of Egypt.  I'm curious how it was built in ancient times.

What is your motto?

The harder you do, the luckier you are. The more self-disciplined you are, the freer you are.

Are you a particularly self-disciplined person?

I am quite self-disciplined when it comes to continuous learning. While self-studying for the Certified Safety Engineer exam, I dedicated at least 2 hours of my spare time each day to studying and I maintained this routine for a year.

Share with us a bit about your career path!

My previous company was engaged in the production of PEEK (Polyetheretherketone), which allowed me to understand the technical and market advantages of Evonik's products. At that time, I had a thought: if I ever had the opportunity, I would definitely join Evonik. Later, in 2013, I came across a recruitment drive for Evonik's new plant in Jilin. I applied successfully and became a DCS (Distributed Control System) operator at the Jilin plant.

During my tenure, I continuously learned and, in addition to the company's training, I also self-studied after work and obtained three certificates over five years. Subsequently, I was promoted to the position of team leader, then transferred to the role of safety specialist, and in 2022, I was promoted to the position of process engineer. Currently, I am mainly responsible for the plant's processes, changes, and related work.

What is the challenging part of your job?

When I was working as a shift leader, my main responsibilities included planning the work schedule for my shift, coordinating tasks among department employees, other departments, and upstream and downstream enterprises, and ensuring the safe and stable operation of the DCS and the site.

The challenge for me was to become proficient in both, on-site and DCS operations. During night shifts, I was the highest authority in the entire plant, responsible for correctly and promptly handling various abnormal situations. Especially in Jilin City during winter, when temperatures can drop below minus 30 degrees Celsius, pipelines and valves often freeze and crack. This required long hours of handling issues in extremely low outdoor temperatures.

What does „Be Part of Something Special“ mean to you?

Everyone is an indispensable part of the team, each professional actively plays to their strengths in every job and ensures that the job is completed smoothly.
