Cyber security and intercultural know how – why is this closely connected in your job?

As an ISO responsible for the Asia Pacific region, including countries such as Japan, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, and Indonesia, and being an Indian, I understand the importance of intercultural knowledge in cybersecurity. Each country has its unique way of thinking and communicating, making it crucial to adapt and find the best approach to reach colleagues.

At Evonik, we have global cybersecurity standards, but the real challenge is sharing them with our diverse team and ensuring they are followed correctly. To overcome this, I encourage open discussions during site visits and cyber awareness sessions, where we learn from each other and address cybersecurity concerns.

This requires not only technical expertise but also cultural sensitivity and adaptability. By educating our colleagues, we ensure that they understand their role as integral parts of our cybersecurity mission, our human firewall—the most crucial line of defense.

How would you define your role?

I see my job as a Security Enabler. I make sure that all digital products coming in are secure and that our IT technology and data are protected. I aim to build and implement measures that enhance our cyber resilience in the region and safeguard our digital territory.

My vision is to establish security governance as a business enabler by protecting our digital business operations from cyber threats, meeting regulatory and customer needs, and thereby enabling our organization to thrive in the digital age.
