Shaping the Future: Strategic and Scientific Advisor Angela

Angela, a strategic and scientific advisor at Evonik, drives sustainable innovation. Her work fosters interdisciplinary collaboration to shape a greener future in the chemical industry.

How has your job as a strategic and scientific advisor in research at Evonik influenced your personal values and beliefs?

Even before I took on my role as a Strategic and Scientific Advisor in the Research and Development department at Evonik, I was convinced that climate protection is one of the most pressing challenges of our time and that energy-intensive industries like the chemical industry can contribute to addressing it.

In my current job, I can channel my passion for sustainability directly into the development of innovations in the chemical industry. Leading the global sustainability project SERO (Scope 3 Emission Reduction Options) gives me the opportunity to link scientific research with customer needs and Evonik's sustainability goals. This experience has reinforced my belief that scientists and innovators play a crucial role in positively shaping the future of the chemical industry.

What if you and your job didn't exist?

Without my role at Evonik, a significant contribution to promoting innovation and sustainability would be missing. As the project leader of SERO, I not only bring my expertise as a chemist but also foster interdisciplinary collaboration. This ability to think outside the box is crucial for developing innovative solutions for alternative raw materials. The goal of slowing down climate change unites many disciplines. Chemists look beyond catalytic options and consider biotechnology, purchasers engage with recyclers instead of just buying fossil raw materials. Bio-based ideas are becoming interesting and economically viable again. It’s important to involve not only direct colleagues but also those along the value chain. What solutions do our suppliers offer? What products do our customers want to sell? Bringing together these diverse requirements requires collaboration across all company areas along the value chains.

Without this interdisciplinary collaboration, the pipeline of creative and sustainable ideas could be significantly impaired. The diversity of approaches and the integration of knowledge enable us to view problems holistically and develop innovative solutions that are both ecologically and economically viable. My job helps fill this pipeline with fresh ideas and ensures that Evonik remains at the forefront of sustainable innovation.

What makes your job at Evonik rewarding?

The excellent collaboration with teams from various business lines and functions! Through our close cooperation, we develop innovative approaches that directly address the needs of Evonik and our customers. By working together in these teams, we ensure that our projects are scientifically sound and commercially relevant.

Another enriching aspect is the interaction with experts and fellows who bring their deep expertise into our projects. They are a valuable source of technical know-how, creative ideas, and new perspectives. Integrating this knowledge into the work of SERO is one of my core responsibilities. Working with dedicated colleagues towards a common goal is incredibly motivating. At Evonik, I collaborate with people who share a deep passion for sustainability and innovation. This commitment creates an inspiring work atmosphere where everyone feels like they are part of something bigger.

What skills are necessary for your job?

First, a passion for science and innovation, combined with a strong commitment to sustainability. Second, the willingness to work in an interdisciplinary team and be open to new ideas. Particularly, the ability to communicate and collaborate effectively is crucial. Lastly, a continuous drive for learning and the flexibility to adapt to new technologies and market demands! Staying flexible and learning leads to success in the ever-changing chemical industry.

Many of these new roles, like mine as the project leader of SERO, allow us to actively shape the future of the industry. This requires well-educated professionals who understand chemical, economic, and technological contexts and can work in interdisciplinary teams. Together, we can make a significant contribution to society!
